The season will see the expansion of the league, with the addition of two new franchises. This will make it the second season to have ten teams, after the 2011 tournament. Chennai Super Kings are the defending champions, having won their fourth title during the previous season.

The Punjab Kings are a franchise cricket team based in Mohali, Punjab, that plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Established in 2008 as the Kings XI Punjab, the franchise is jointly owned by Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zintaand Karan Paul. The team plays its home matches at the PCA Stadium, Mohali. Since 2010, they also have been playing some of their home games at either Dharamsala or Indore. Apart from the 2014 season when they topped the league table and finished runners-up, the team has made only one other playoff appearance (in IPL 2008) in 13 seasons. The highest run scorer for the franchise is Shaun Marsh and highest wicket taker is Piyush Chawla. The Punjab Kings played in the now-defunct Champions League Twenty20 once, in 2014 as the Kings XI Punjab and finished as semi-finalists.
The Kings XI Punjab's catchment areas are Kashmir, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana—evident from the letter sequence "K J H P H" in the banner of the team's logo. Apart from the 2014 season when they topped the league table and finished runners-up, the team has made only one other playoff appearance in 13 seasons. The team is captained by KL Rahul and coached by Anil Kumble.
On 17 February 2021, Kings XI Punjab was renamed to Punjab Kings before the IPL 2021.
